madelife is proud to present, Words, a collection of original poetry, photography and graphic design written and produced by 19 year old, Carlyn Maia. Diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in 2016, Carlyn chose to funnel her emotions during recovery into shedding positive light onto an illness with traditionally negative connotations while exploring the complicated and often times challenging aspects of living with an illness.
Carlyn found relief and understanding in her recovery after being diagnosed. Having struggled with intense emotional responses and many borderline symptoms throughout her life, being diagnosed empowered her with the ability to examine and reinforce her inner strength to live a more in control of her condition.
For as long as she can remember, Carlyn has been writing poetry. As her main form of expression, Words was written as an honest take on how Carlyn experiences herself and the world around her. With this collection, she hopes to highlight a reality that is often overlooked, misunderstood, and judged by many individuals and mental health professionals alike.
Never one for a negative approach, Carlyn notes that “Everything is more intense with BPD, the brightness of joy is just as overwhelming as the sting of abandonment and betrayal. It can be beautiful.” As part of her new life outlook, Carlyn seeks not to dull her borderline experiences but to embrace and recover from them by finding inspiration, expression, and safety in the chaos of her daily life.
